Converting a van for adventure is an exciting decision, but it always starts with a crucial step : choosing the right base . Too small, it will lack comfort; too big, it will become difficult to drive and park. So, how do you navigate the models, sizes, engines and uses? As a craftsman specializing in custom conversions, I help you make the right choice, based on your life project .
What use will you make of your van?
Before talking about models or brands, you must first ask the right questions:
- Do you want to travel on weekends or live there year-round?
- Are you single, in a relationship, with a dog or with two children?
- Are you planning to sleep in campsites, in the wild, or in the mountains in winter?
- Do you want to cook, work, shower inside?
Each response directly guides the volume required and the arrangements to be made.
Understanding the templates: L1H1, L2H2, L3H2… what’s that?
Vans are classified by length (L) and height (H). Here are the most common:
- L1H1 : compact (short traffic type)
→ Perfect for everyday use, but very limited for living in - L2H2 : intermediate (type Ducato L2H2, Master L2H2 Sprinter L2H2)
→ Good balance between maneuverability and habitability - L3H2 / L3H3 : large van (Boxer, Sprinter type)
→ Ideal for life on board in all seasons, but be careful when parking
