What electrical system for your van?

Managing electricity in your converted van: a practical guide for successful autonomy

Electricity is an essential element in the layout of your van. It determines your daily comfort, especially if you want to be independent during your travels . Whether you simply want to charge your phone or work remotely from your van, a good electrical installation is essential. The good news is that you don't necessarily need a complicated 230V system. For many, a well-thought-out 12V installation is more than enough . But be careful: leaving without electricity is exposing yourself to hassle, especially if you want to travel far or for a long time.

Which battery for your campervan?

The foundation of any autonomous electrical system is the 12V deep cycle auxiliary battery . Unlike the engine battery, which provides a large, rapid discharge to start the vehicle, the auxiliary battery is designed to provide continuous power over a long period of time. I recommend an AGM, GEL, or Lithium battery depending on your budget and usage:

  • AGM / GEL : very good for holidays and weekends, discharge up to 50%.
  • Lithium : ideal for living in a van year-round, 80% discharge, longer lifespan... but higher price.

How to recharge your battery in a converted van?

You have three possible sources for recharging your auxiliary battery. The best thing is to combine all three to be autonomous whatever the conditions .

1. Solar panel

The most common: you install a rigid solar panel on the roof, connected to an MPPT solar regulator . The whole thing works autonomously, without having to do anything. Perfect for recharging your battery even when stationary, as long as there is a little sun.
