Converted van in winter: the keys to staying warm

Winter Campervan Adventures: The Keys to Staying Warm Heading off on an adventure in your campervan in the middle of winter is a magical experience. Snowy landscapes, a cozy atmosphere, hot springs, or nomadic skiing… But without good insulation and an efficient heating system, the dream can quickly turn into a nightmare. How can you properly prepare your van for the cold? Here are all my expert tips for enjoying your van, even at -10°C.

Why anticipate the cold in vanlife?

Unlike a house, a van is a small, metallic space. Without proper insulation or heating, the interior quickly becomes freezing at night and damp when you wake up . The cold isn't just uncomfortable: it can also damage your equipment, create condensation on the walls, or even block your water pump if it freezes. Whether you're going to the mountains, Scandinavia, or simply outside of the nice weather, the goal is clear: stay warm and dry in your van.

1. Insulate your van well: the basics for winter

Thermal insulation is the first step in living in a van during winter. It helps retain interior heat, prevent thermal bridges, and limit condensation.

Materials I recommend:

  • Spray-on cork + Armaflex : This is the combination I install most often. Cork regulates humidity, while Armaflex provides effective insulation.
  • Multi-layered : in complement, but never alone.
  • Thermal mats on windows : essential for insulating the windshield, windows and skylights.
